How to choose your water pump

What is a water pump?

Water pumps allow you to draw water from wells or reservoirs for irrigation or domestic supply, transport water from one place to another quickly, drain flooded spaces or evacuate water from the pool.

Pumps also help us to save water as they allow us to recover water from rain, wells or tanks to be reused for irrigation or toilet flushing, thus reducing the consumption of drinking water. But…

How to choose one pump or another?

First of all there are two types of pump models, electric or gasoline. When a water pump is driven by an engine with fuel, it is called a motor pump. Water Pumps with Motor or Motor Pumps are used for large purposes and are always powered by gasoline or other type of fuel. Its operation depends on this engine and the advantage is that it has a higher power output depending on the fuel tank, engine type, etc.

When a water pump is electrically driven, i.e. connected to an electrical outlet or charged, it is called an electric pump. Today we are going to focus on electric water pumps, because of their quality/price ratio, and also because they are the most used in DIY and gardening.

Types of electric water pumps

We find it necessary to use water pumps for many aspects of life and work. In construction, to increase the pressure in any supply system, in domestic water supply systems, in fire protection systems, for the extraction of water in wells, reservoirs, fountains or cisterns, in the evacuation of water by flooding or for an irrigation system for an orchard or garden. Therefore, there are several types:

  • Dirty or clean water pumps

Stagnant water, used water or water with suspended particles. If what we want is a drainage pump we will have to choose a model prepared to work with dirty water. The dirty water pump filters the particles out of the dirty water and only allows the liquid to pass through.

Dirty water pumps can also be used to pump clean water, i.e., for domestic use and daily consumption, we could also use it.

At Brikum you can find dirty water pumps capable of extracting up to 16,500 liters of dirty water per hour.

  • Water pumps for wells

Water pumps for wells are extremely powerful and reliable equipment, specially designed for pumping purified water from reservoirs, wells and fountains, capable of pumping thousands of liters of water per hour at a height of many meters.

A clear example of this type of pump would be Stanley’s SXUP1000XWE, a water pump with a powerful 1,000W motor that pumps 5,200 liters of water per hour up to 55 meters high. The sturdy Stanley pump housing is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and is therefore extremely durable. Its robust pressure connection is equipped with a brass insert and an integrated check valve provides optimum operating comfort. A dirt screen also made of stainless steel protects the pump from damage.

  • Pressure group

Compact, designed for reliable automatic and continuous water supply to networks lacking sufficient and/or unstable pressure in domestic applications (drinking water in single-family houses, sprinkler irrigation, etc.) or for any other type of industrial applications.

At Brikum you will see the Stanley SXUP1300XFBE pressure pump with pressure switch, pressure gauge and 20 L capacity, which allows you to extract water from reservoirs or wells for use in irrigation systems. It has a power of 1300W that offers up to 4,200 liters of water per hour.
