Waterproof your home

Brikum / 10 de April de 2018

The rainy season is starting and dampness is beginning to appear in our buildings!

Moisture is one of the great enemies of buildings, causing leaks in the roof, leaks in the walls and deteriorating the facades and/or terraces. To avoid this situation, it is necessary to have a product that, although it may not seem like it, is essential for many of us. For this reason, today in Brikum we present the waterproofing.

But what exactly is a waterproofing and what is it used for? Waterproofing agents are chemical substances that prevent a liquid component (especially water) from penetrating a given building surface and damaging it. In this sense, the timely use of this type of products can prevent the eventual appearance of leaks, pests and even fungi. In addition, it is very versatile as it can be used on terraces, swimming pools, roofs, facades, wooden surfaces and even floors.

Now that you know what a waterproofing is and what it is used for, Brikum presents its range of waterproofing products:

Aquaflex Roof Plus is a ready-to-use liquid waterproofing membrane composed of synthetic polyurethane-acrylic resins in aqueous dispersion, solvent-free and free of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Once dry, Aquaflex Roof Plus creates a continuous membrane, with an elongation capacity of over 350%, resistant to atmospheric agents and ultraviolet rays, thus guaranteeing long-lasting protection to the substrate.

  • Increased elasticity compared to usual acrylic waterproofing membranes.
  • Fast drying.
  • Ready to use, easy to apply thanks to its special consistency and high distension capacity.

APPLICATION

The product is ready to use, although it is recommended to mix the contents of the container to obtain a complete homogeneity of the product.

Once the substrate has been suitably prepared and primed, apply Aquaflex Roof Plus with a long nap roller, brush or suitable airless spraying system.

Proceed with the application of Aquaflex Roof Plus in a uniform manner in at least two coats of thickness. Apply the successive coats in such a way that the passes intersect with those of the previous coat.

Several stratigraphies, of increasing durability, can be made by using Aquaflex Roof Plus applied in different thicknesses and with different consumptions, for which please refer to the corresponding table.

In the case of substrates with micro-cracks, in correspondence with bituminous sheet overlaps or when choosing to create a system with a durability of 10 or 15 years, insert Mapetex 50, a non-woven polypropylene fabric, between the different layers of Aquaflex Roof Plus, as indicated below.

Apply an abundant layer of product and then spread Mapetex 50 compressing it with a smooth trowel or a spiked roller to obtain a perfect impregnation.

Once this coat is completely dry, the next coat of Aquaflex Roof Plus can be applied.

APPLICATION

PREPARATION OF THE SUPPORT:

Completely clean the support of dirt, grease, algae, dust and disintegrated materials.

Always stir the product before use, manually or with the help of a mixer at low revolutions.

For difficult surfaces, a thin coat of primer is recommended.

Applicable by roller, brush or trowel.

CRACKS, CREVICES AND MEETING AREAS:

Cover existing cracks (<2mm) allowing the product to penetrate. Allow to dry and apply a homogeneous layer of 1 mm thick around the area of possible leaks.

CIRCULABLE COVERS:

Apply the product ensuring that it is homogeneously distributed over the entire surface. Apply two cross coats at a coverage of 0.75 Kg/m2 each coat. Let the product dry for 7 hours between coats.

PASSABLE ROOFS:

Following the above instructions, apply the product in two crossed coats at a yield of 1 Kg/m2 per coat.

REHABILITATIONS WITH SUPERIOR TILING:

Apply two cross coats at a rate of 0.75 kg/m2 per coat. Between coats, add a reinforcing mesh and allow to dry for at least 7 hours. Complete by adding silica sand while the product is still wet to ensure proper adhesion of the tiling. Once the product is dry, tile with tile adhesive cement or Ceys Total Tech (silica sand is not required).

Mapelastic AquaDefense Mapei Waterproofing Paint

Mapelastic AquaDefense is a single-component, ready-to-use, light blue colored, totally solvent-free paste, based on synthetic resins in aqueous dispersion, very fast drying. Mapelastic AquaDefense can be easily applied by long nap roller, brush or trowel on horizontal, inclined and vertical surfaces. After rapid drying, Mapelastic AquaDefense becomes an elastic, non-sticky coating, resistant to light foot traffic after only 3 hours, which provides an optimum bonding surface for ceramic, stone and mosaic tile adhesives of all types. The elasticity of Mapelastic AquaDefense allows it to withstand the normal movements of expansion and contraction of the substrate due to thermal changes and vibrations.

  • no need to use a drill or mixer because it comes ready to use
  • resists rainwater after 1 hour from the application of the first coat and 3 hours from the application of the second coat
  • allows the laying of ceramic tiles after only 4 hours (times refer to a temperature of +23°C and a relative humidity of 50%, with product applied on dry screeds, with residual humidity lower than 3%).

APPLICATION

Mapelastic AquaDefense should be applied evenly with a long nap roller, brush or trowel, in two thin coats, about 0.4 mm per coat; wait until the first coat is dry, checking that the product takes on a darker, matte color, before applying the next coat, crossing it with the previous one (approximately 1 hour, at +23ºC, with a relative humidity of 50% and with substrates with a residual humidity of less than 3%).

The final thickness of two coats of Mapelastic AquaDefense should never be less than 0.8 mm to obtain a consistent, elastic and continuous film, taking care that there are no interruptions due to imperfections in the substrate.

In the case of applying Mapelastic AquaDefense as an anti-fracture membrane on deteriorated substrates, it is advisable to insert Mapetex Sel as a reinforcing reinforcement in the first layer of the fresh product.

Mapetex Sel should be pressed with a spiked roller over the first coat of Mapelastic AquaDefense while it is still fresh.

Wait until the first coat is dry and apply the second coat completely covering Mapetex Sel.

Drying times can be extended, since the insertion of Mapetex Sel implies an increase in the final thickness of the applied film.

In the case of balconies, baths, saunas, Turkish baths, it is possible to carry out hydraulic tightness tests 12 hours after the application of the last coat of Mapelastic AquaDefense.

Ceramic, stone or mosaic tiles can be laid 4 hours after the application of the second coat (at +23°C temperature and 50% relative humidity), which can be chosen according to the intended use of the floor or wall covering.
